Blaska Policy Werkes

David Blaska, going out of his way to provoke progressives in Madison WI to make America safe for democracy!

Enjoying Wisconsin’s Big Heat

Heat units

Blaska Experimental Work Farm (and Penal Colony) here in the badlands of Madison WI is receiving some major heat units from the local solar-power monopoly, as well we should in the middle of July. (The climate isn’t changing THAT much!) Just recompense from a cool and wet June.

The unlettered field hands have been mowing the lawns extra high, as directed by their cruel (but fair) overseer. (As they labored, they sang their primitive work songs from the Black Sabbath catalog.)

Kentucky bluegrass likes cool feet and should withstand the 90-degree F heat being forecasted. Also said to crowd out weeds. We are trying to reduce chemicals. (Blaska also loves puppies.)

The overseer does wish the white clover  drilled into the front lawn last year had taken hold. Probably too shady. Love the look of all those little heads, like white caps on an ocean of green. The legume makes its own nitrogen; deep roots keeps the lawn green.

The Work Farm’s stand of Monarda is magnificent. (AKA bee balm, bergamot.) May have planted a couple a few years ago but they have naturalized beautifully. We get our fair share of hummingbirds, which relish the flower. Also filling feeders with the clear sugar water.

Speaking of naturalized, that’s what the milkweed is doing. Totally wild. Used to pull them but now weed around them. Good-looking plant and fragrant flower. Said to be catnip for butterflies but have seen few so far. Are they being turned away at  the Mexican border? (Trolling the Trump haters.)

This ownership never planted bluebells but they are everywhere. If they are invasive, we’re not complaining. They have taken over the area under my spruce tree, now that I have purchased more real estate by pruning up to shoulder height.

Pole beans are doing better than last year thanks to the heat. The field hands allowed the beets get weedy.

Spring-planted asparagus roots sending up wispy, feathery foliage. Had allowed the beds to go to weed but now hacking through the overgrowth to give them sun. Nourished the tender shoots with a taste of Jung’s 17-16-28 NPK slow-release fertilizer. The old-fashioned Mary Washingtons are doing better than the hybrid, all-male Jersey Knights. (Maybe you cannot fool Ma Nature.)

Ornamental grasses look good, too. Will give them a shot of nitrogen soon. They will thank me later with full seed heads and fall color.

Blaska’s Bottom Line: Only 57% of Wisconsin farm fields were said to be in good condition this week compared to 75% a year ago. Hoping this summer’s heat — and reprieve from daily drownings — will do the trick. Everyone has a stake in agriculture’s success.

As a lifelong gardener, I’ve always been a big fan of milkweed. It may have something to do with childhood memories of the fields around my parents’ house where it proliferated, along with the flamboyantly striped caterpillars that would eventually become (aptly named) Monarchs. I’ve noticed many gardeners in my near east-side neighborhood have incorporated them into the landscape.

That parenthetical remark about the climate not changing that much is sure to set some readers seething. Surely by now you’ve realized that any aberration, no matter how small or routine, can–MUST–be attributed to climate change. I’d be willing to make a substantial bet that sometime in the next few days as Madison swelters, some local member-in-good-standing of the climate change cult will write in to the State Journal pointing to a heat wave in July as proof positive that climate change is right on schedule to annihilate us in 12 years (at least according to a certain bimbo in Congress who must know all about the subject, given her endless bloviations on it.) And other true believers will no doubt make the same claim about (Gasp!) a hurricane occurring in hurricane season. Let a climate change skeptic make a similar claim about, say, an exceptionally cold winter to bolster his case, and these same people will start squealing about how a single weather event can’t be used to raise doubt about climate change. To borrow a phrase, “Ah, Lefty, so much hypocrisy, so little time.”

Didn’t OCRAZYo-Cortez say she was just joshing about the 12 year thingey?

Why yes, yes, I believe oCRAZYo-Cortez DID say she was just joshing about the 12 year thingey.

Give it an ‘effin’ rest gotch. This is the first time in weeks that Blaska hasn’t gone totally snowflake about AAM, AAf, cars, cops or the school board hating him. A post with beans and bluebells is a welcome change and you have to go and start your usual gotchification again. As you so often post STFU.

And right on schedule, Madison.com today publishes a front-page piece on how “Climate Change will make these Wisconsin summer heatwaves more common!’ Funny how they failed to publish that in the dreary, wet & cool days we experienced this spring and early summer. The degree of predictability of the obedient Leftist Lemmings in the ‘news media’ is almost hilarious.

  2. As to farm fields……I’ve driven through Lower Michigan, Northern Indiana and Ohio, Central Ohio, northern Illinois, and northern + central Iowa over the last few weeks. “Knee-high by 4th” was only going to happen in central Ohio–plus a few random fields the farmers managed to get into in the other States.

Buy your cornflakes now. In February, they won’t be on the shelves.

That @richard lesiak doesn’t know what he’s talking about is the One Sure Thing upon which one may hang their hat, here.

The Gotch’s Great Lake of choice, Gitche Gummee, was down ~ 22 inches/55.88 cms ~ 13 years ago; the shrillest of the shrill attributed it to the Global Warming that’s here and worse than the models predicted.

The Gitch has gained all that back and then some; you’ll never guess why…?

          dad:
Check USGS data for water table data in the central sands country of WI. Water tables have been in decline for years, driven by the increase in hi-capacity irrigation wells. It has been in the news for a number of years, even had a significant decision by the previous AG in favor of the irrigation at the expense of homeowners, municipalities, trout streams, etc..

Come on up here, there is knee high corn right across our driveway.

And please folks, PLEASE take the time to recognize the difference between weather and climate. It isn’t that tough, and that knowledge will save some embarrassing moments in the future.

“Climate requires you to raise taxes. Weather doesn’t.”

Tell that to the folks at FEMA. Or do weather events such as flooding, hurricanes, blizzards, etc. occur without a price tag?

Good advice for folks on both sides of the issue. Now all you have to do is convince the media to call out ANYONE–no matter their political persuasion–who tries to pass off an isolated weather event as “proof” of climate change. Good luck with that.

The Gotchberg Organic Garden & Lefty Conversion Therapy Emporium greatly expanded its operations in the off-season, with the help of A. L. Landscaping, ~ 50 8′ 6 X 6 timbers, and five yards of soil personally toted & distributed and 3 of which were the marvelously fertile & high-yielding Purple Cow Organic Compost.

An odd growing season, this; the latest & coolest I can remember. Heck, the garlic didn’t sprout until March 21st.

Lilacs, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Elephant Ear Caladiums (thus far) & July Elberta Peach (dormant) under-performed. Tulips, Daffodils (available through Memorial Day; a first), & Peonies were way late but spectacular, with the latter being the best EVAH while providing numerous full, fragrant bouquets for two nonagenarian widowed neighbors AND my Dear 90 + year old Mother.

Ligularia (Rocket’s currently in spectacular bloom), Hostas, & Heuchera hittin’ it out of the park. Our favorite annual, Sun Coleus, is providing a striking array of vivid colors.

Soon, the late July blooming, intoxicatingly fragrant Oriental (Stargazer) Lilies will open up; if there is a Heaven, it’s lined with Stargazers!

Italian Flat Leaf & Curly Parsley, and Sweet & Thai Basil are holding their own. Lettuce, Pak Choi, Daikon Radish, & Meteor Cherry are over-performing & we’re doing a land office business in Red Russkie, Rebor, Prizm, Black Magic, Kalette & Lacinato Kale; squarsh crawling all over with no end in sight.

The Peppers (Giant Marconi, Sweet Banana, Corno di toro, Gypsy) are diggin’ this hot weather.

The tomatoes (Giant Belgium, Mr. Stripey, Early Girl, Better Boy, Whopper, Celebrity, Mountain Magic, Mountain Merit, San Marzano, Sun Sugar, & Patio) have the thickest stalks/vines I’ve ever seen. Size DOES matter, and it’ll come in handy when its holding up all the increasingly heavy fruits that’ve set; this heat’s going to send them to the moon.

Shoot; we’ve acquired another freezer in anticipation of all the thickly sumptuous sauce the lovely and long suffering Mrs. Gotch will be crafting.

Our favorite? Any local knows the Namio (of restaurant fame) name. Patriarch Joe introduced a variety he brought back from Sicily over 50 years ago (the indeterminate Namio Heirloom) that’s only available at Felly’s. It’s a kind of hybrid Roma that’s larger and lemon shaped, a slicer that’s juicy as heck and one of the most versatile I’ve found, which is why we planted 15 of ’em.

Welp, (to paraphrase Blaska) “Them plants ain’t gonna water themselves.”

    @Dan B;

“The climate doesn’t change THAT much”

Seems something’s changing in the good ol’ U. S. of A., and because other Lefty media have…um…SPIKED IT, you’ll see it here first:

Per a Lefty Axios article about a democrat poll of “swing voters”:
    (bolds mine thoughout)
HoR Alexandria OCRAZYo-Cortez was recognized by 74% of voters in the poll; 22% had a favorable view.

HoR Ilhan Omar Dimwit-MN) was recognized by 53% of the voters; 9% had a favorable view.

Socialism was viewed favorably by 18% of the voters and unfavorably by 69%.

Capitalism was 56% favorable; 32% unfavorable.

In other words, many things that the current crop of unctuous democrat POTUS hopefuls hold dear are swirling the bottom of the Loo.

The question: Is this weather or climate?

Doesn’t really matter, am I right; either way, Lefty’s too stupid to come in out of the rain!
