‘A sarcastic jerk’ comments
The top line at CNN on-line early this morning (06-08-19) is:
“Family wants answers in Army vet’s death”
— a headline about as anodyne as they come. Families are always wanting answers when a member dies.
Relegated to a secondary position is Trump’s victory in slowing the migrant refugee flood from Mexico. He played tough by threatening tariffs and Mexico responded with reforms, including:
- hardening its border with Guatemala;
- letting asylum seekers cool their heels in Mexico while they await adjudication;
- cracking down on human traffickers.
The story was top-line at the Wall Street Journal and the NY Times. But at MSNBC, you could almost feel the pucker. It tried to spin the story as a Trump retreat by headlining: “Trump won’t impose tariffs on Mexico, for now.
The president announced what appears to be a deal with Mexico on trade and migration to avoid implementing tariffs, but it’s not clear yet if the outlines of the deal are actually feasible or legal.
No mention at all on Vox.
Democrats behaving badly
Democrats, who have denied any crisis at the border, were truculent.
Chuck Schumer, WaPo tells us, “reacted sarcastically”:
“This is an historic night! @realDonaldTrump has announced that he has cut a deal to ‘greatly reduce, or eliminate, Illegal Immigration coming from Mexico, and into the United States,’ ” Schumer wrote on Twitter. “Now that that problem is solved, I’m sure we won’t be hearing any more about it in the future.”
So he’s telling us to worry that it’s a phony claim of a deal — fake news. Or does he sound like a sarcastic jerk, hearing about progress dealing with a problem and snarking about how it’s not actually completely solved? But what’s the poor man to do? His party suffers if there is an immigration problem and if Trump has any success solving it. Oh, I don’t know, he could be gracious and hopeful.

What fascinating times we live in. Many major nations have formed a Uniparty that pretends to be what was once thought to be Democrat, Republican, Green, Social Democrat, Labor, Conservative etc. The Uniparty of the US, Britain, Italy, France,the EU, increasingly so in Scandinavia have forgotten the citizens outside the capitals while the elites do very well on globalization, near zero growth, open borders, high taxation and endless wars that can’t be won.
While much of the globe moves to the right and populist governance after twenty years of incompetence……… Madison moves Left.
Fascinating.

Was looking forward to your comments about Lt. Gov’s excessive transport and protection bene’s that are 5000% above those of the previous Republican Lt. Gov. I heard Vicki’s speech on this, called my State Rep on Joint Finance, and voila. Lt. Gov’s perk was, I am told, eliminated.

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) aptly described it as a non-binding charade, and it was; Xi Jinping bent Hopey Changey specifically, and Lefty generally, way over.

True, Mussolini was at one time a socialist journalist, whereas Trump is incapable of coherently writing in more than 144 characters. Even in that limited format he usually misspells and tortures the language.

You still confuse fascism and socialism. I learned the difference in high school. You should look up the definitions of the two. It’s as easy as right (fascism) vs. left (socialism). Fascism was happily capitalist; just ask the Krupps.

No, no and no. There is National Socialism and International Socialism. Hitler came to power in an industrialized nation with good R & D, high levels of expertise and he needed a first class military. Is a party member going to make better steel than Krupp? Chemical engineering than IG Farben and Bayer? Better cars and tanks than Mercedes and Porsche? No. To screw that up you need Chavez/Maduro/Castro levels of socialist stupid to do to industry what they did to oil exports. Mussolini and Hitler were not that stupid.
It ain’t a bird with wings ABob. Its a circle. Liberty, Freedom and individual rights are 180 degrees from both totalitarian socialisms which are the same except for the means of production.

Exactly, Splat, they don’t have much in common and that’s why National Socialism is socialism in name only. They’re on a spectrum, not a circle, with your liberty, freedom, etc. in the middle between the two extremes of hard right Nazis and hard left international socialism. At the extremes, the two share aspects of totalitarianism: police state; elevation of the supreme leader; etc. Difference in ownership of the means of production is kind of at the heart of it, doncha think?

Your problem is with totalitarianism, reasonably enough. Taken to its extreme, “the workers,” “the people” own the means of production under socialism and the state operates as their vehicle. The Nazis reversed that. Means of production (and profits) stayed in private hands and the masses were the subservient vehicle of the state. Who did Hitler’s brown shirts have running street battles with? The communists, and then next the unions. Hard left and hard right may both be totalitarian, but they’re different animals. To label Nazis socialists (despite the word being in the name of their party) is wrong. And to lump today’s democratic socialists in with national socialists, as you love to do, is head-spinnigly, doubly wrong.

Its only a question of degree. The end result of all Socialism is disaster, every time. England, India, Russia, China, most of Africa, Cuba and now Venezuela all have two things in common; Socialism and disaster. China took the tiny step up to Fascism and lifted 100,000,000 people out of dire poverty.
Some nations got better because they had a tradition of laws and could recoil from the inevitable disaster. The only successful export of Socialism? Anything with feet, or, in Cuba? Anyone that can afford an inner tube and is willing to risk ninety miles of sharks.
Dave Barry said it best, “Bernie means the nice kind of Socialism where everybody gets free stuff, not the bad kind of Socialism where citizens fight over the last beet in the co-op.”
