The thing about floods is they aren’t over the next day

Got flood junk?

We are learning that flooding is a long term proposition. We’re into clean-up mode here at the Stately Manor, with frequent trips to the City of Madison junk drop-off site on Badger Road.

We reported that the pond on the south side of the Beltline opposite the pond at Odana Hills golf course had expanded to four times its size, at least. Alderman Mo Cheeks can expect a petition to dredge that pond to increase capacity. The Capital Times ventured into Orchard Ridge to report on the basement flooding.

Now Capital Newspapers reports that the dam at Tenney Park may fail.

Mayor Soglin directing traffic from WKOW TV-27

Good for Mayor Soglin; he was out directing traffic after Monday night’s flood.

East Johnson Street at Tenney Park is already closed to traffic. As one wag said, Dane County has issued a No Wake Order for Madison streets!

Check out this website for flooding updates in the city.

Some of our neighbors report sewage bubbling up into their basements. The Stately Manor escaped that. And, for some reason, 5 inches of flood water drained out of the basement once the grate was scraped clear. Still, we’re in the market for glass blocks mortared to the foundation to replace the basement windows. Trouble is finding someone who does that kind of work.

This from a neighbor in Midvale Heights:

Just spent two hours pushing human waste and toilet paper back into the sewer drain. Oh how I wish I had just suffered flood waters!  My sewer backed up 4-5 inches of brown water.  This is the minor first step—so much work still to do but all I can do for now.  Thanks MH for giving me a forum in which to whine!

[ Two days ago ] Well if it makes anyone feel better, City Sewer just stopped by and said nothing can be done, at least 200 houses in neighborhood have called about sewer back ups and that a bus floated off street at Midvale and got stuck up on median.

Neighbors are making a run on fans, pumps, and dehumidifiers.

It’s gracious of you to mention Soglin’s contribution, but he is the mayor, after all. So I would expect this – and more.

The green space ravine between even/odd side South & North Kenosha Drive (The Gotch’s old stomping grounds) blew out the bank AND sidewalk & curb on the south side of Regent Street.

After it makes its way through Glen Oaks Hills Park, that water goes down through an underground tunneled system past Knoches & The Oak Crest, and ends up in Spring Harbor.

Lot of inanimate flood material (carpet/furniture/etc.) on Burnett Drive terraces, one block got south.

    Yoikes!

“Alderman Mo Cheeks can expect a petition to dredge that pond to increase capacity.”

Make sure you get engineering help on the petition, as just dredging the pond won’t help with flood control unless you keep it empty or draw it down before rain events,

Having gone through a house fire in the month of February and dealing with spring monsoons during reconstruction, I feel sympathy for those affected by the flooding. That being said, somewhere around 2014 the metro sewer folks sent out notices to the Emerald city homeowners advising them to have the “backflow preventers on their sewer lines inspected or replaced”. Those valves tend to freeze up after ~20 years as a lot of folks out with this flood. As I recall the City was also offering sewer backup insurance at the time through a third party. Something like 70.00 a year for 10,000.00 of coverage. Granted 10,000.00 wouldn’t remedy every situation, but, it would make it a LOT more palatable. We briefly considered having the valve replaced at our place but decided not to as we were selling the house and moving out of the city due to the cruddy schools. Glad we moved in more ways than one.

    She doesn’t disappoint!

“Arctic’s oldest and thickest sea ice breaks for the first time in history.” A more accurate statement would be “… for the first time in RECORDED history,” barely a blip on the timeline of all history. Just waiting for someone to write a letter to the State Journal offering definitive “proof” that Madison’s floods can be linked directly to climate change. One of the sidebars asks us to “think about all the global warming rules and regs and how puny their effect compared to the California wild fires.” One of the many omissions in the data that the Chicken Littles of climate change use to promote their agenda is the percentage of those fires started by arsonists (like the largest in the recent spate of the CA fires). Though I’m sure some scientist with a nice hefty grant is working on a theory that arson is a natural consequence of climate change. Then there’s the fact that so much of the landscape of that state is being “developed” (i.e., smothered by endless rows of houses and strip malls in areas inimical to human settlement). Fires happen when careless people live and/or recreate in places–those naturally prone to fire– where they don’t belong.

Are the CA fires like, you know, the worst EVAH?

      Not exactly.

On the same day as the Great Chicago Fire, a small community up the way of @hankdog/old baldy set a precedent that likely may never be topped.

My deep sea commercial fisherman pal Dave Mathison, who used to live across from June Franklin and makes his living on the water, is back in town.

After seeing the pictures above, and some a neighbor took of our area’s newest navigable inland body of water, the extended Odana Pond, he was, not to put too fine a point on it, impressed by the amount of flooding on his/our old stomping ground.

He & a pal got bumped out of an Odana tee time because the back nine is closed until further notice; perhaps about the time the #12 green & #13 tee and the #15 tee are above water and dry.

    Today ain’t helping!

  8. Glass block can be installed by bricklayers. I also had a remodeling (carpenter) contractor who did that sort of work. Consider purchasing the ones that have a small (screened) opening available for cross-ventilation.

“One of the researchers, Ken Potter, now a professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering, said the research should be viewed with the understanding that a simulation today would be better because of the adjustments made from the initial work.

Nevertheless, he said the modeling serves as a cautionary tale: Dane County and other communities should be thinking about improving stormwater management to keep water on land and not spilling into storm sewers and taxing watersheds.

RELATED: Assembly approves bill to allow more development of wetlands under state control

Potter says the state took a step backward earlier this year when the Republican-controlled Legislature rolled back regulations that allowed for more development of isolated wetlands, which play key roles on retaining water. ”

Looks like the current administration in Madison is making matters worse….
